In the case of semi-recessed luminaires, not all components of the luminaire sit on the ceiling or wall like with surface-mounted luminaires, but one of the components must be installed somewhere else, e.g. behind the plasterboard ceiling / wall. In many semi-recessed luminaires, it’s the ballast, or the luminaires need a cavity box for installation. The difference to recessed luminaires is that with this installation, all components of the luminaire or spotlight must fit into the ceiling.
